XINSURANCE, a leader in specialty liability insurance solutions, has announced its sponsorship of their latest offshore racing team to join the ever growing stable led by notable marine industry figures, Gregg Reichman and David Whelan.
Reichman, the team owner and throttleman, has selected Whelan as the driver of the S88 Super Stock Race Boat. Whelan, founder and owner of Gulf Coast Complete Marine, brings extensive experience in high-performance marine mechanics and offshore racing strategy. His expertise in advanced composites and hull design has helped to establish him in the hyper-competitive marine industry.
Reichman, who launched his offshore racing career in 1992 at the age of 32, has throttled a wide variety of craft, including an open-cockpit A Class 32-footer built by Larry Smith, a 30-foot canopied Phantom built by Will Smith and a 30-foot canopied Skater. He has competed in multiple sanctioned competitions and logged countless hours piloting high-performance catamarans. His decision to return to offshore racing after a 17-year absence was driven by his commitment to building an unbeatable team and his long-standing collaboration with Whelan. His brand-new Victory hull should be ready in time for the pair to compete at St. Petersburg (Sept. 5-7), after which they plan to race in Clearwater (Sept. 26-28), Englewood (Oct. 9-12) and Key West (Nov. 2-9).
Although he has competed in numerous classes prior to 2025, this will be the first time he's been part of the Super Stock fleet. He tells Speedboat that he was drawn to the class because of the sheer number of teams involved—it's got the largest boat count of any class in offshore. "The expectation is that there will be 15 boats at every race this year," he said. "I think they've done a really good job of diverging from what everybody else is doing. The Super Stock class is almost a show on its own now. I wouldn't find a lot of gratification in being in a class where there were two or three boats. The number of competitors is the main thing that I like about it."
In addition, Reichman is equally skilled at piloting both boats with I/O and outboard power. "I've had a lot of inboard high-performance catamaran experience, but I also have a lot of outboard experience," he said. "I have a 360 Wright Performance right now with Mercury Racing 500Rs."
XINSURANCE’s sponsorship aligns with its commitment to supporting high-risk ventures through its innovative all-in-one insurance coverage. “We’re thrilled to sponsor David and Gregg’s team,” said Rick J. Lindsey, President and CEO of XINSURANCE. “Their dedication and enthusiasm, combined with our shared values of preparedness and excellence, make this partnership a perfect fit.”
Whelan expressed his excitement for the collaboration. “Joining forces with Gregg was an easy decision. Our shared work ethic and passion for high-performance boats, combined with the backing of XINSURANCE, positions us to make a significant impact in the sport,” he said.
Reichman echoed this sentiment. “After stepping away from offshore racing, I was eager to return. Partnering with David has been a pivotal move, and with XINSURANCE’s support, we’re set to achieve remarkable success,” he said.
As the new duo gears up for competition in the most competitive class in offshore—Super Stock—race fans are eagerly anticipating an exciting season that kicks off with the new Professional Racing Organization (PRO) regional race in Lake Havasu City, AZ on May 1-3 and then full force for the Thunder on Cocoa Beach, scheduled for May 15-18, 2025.
