The Texas Outlaw Challenge—the massive annual speedboat event scheduled for June 22-26 this year—has released details for its shootout, to be held Friday, June 24.

One of the nation’s biggest and most popular performance-boat events, Texas Outlaw comprises two poker runs, a gigantic pool party and various other get-togethers. But the signature attraction is the National Shootout Championship, at which a Top Gun award goes to the driver of the fastest boats on radar. The Challenge attracts top-tier racers and shootout veterans across the country, including Kenny Mungle, Win Farnsworth and Kenny Armstrong.

Organizer Paul Robinson has released the following specifics for the 2016 event:‍

DATE / TIME: Friday morning from 8 a.m. to noon.

MANDATORY SAFETY MEETING: 8 a.m. (sharp) at Alan’s Swamp Shack.

TRACK FORMAT: 40 mph restricted course speed entry (radar verified), with 1-mile track distance to reach speed (radar captured), then 1-mile safe shut-down area.

RADAR COURSE SAFETY PROGRAM: This area of the Bay has been selected for safety during high speed radar run activity based on it’s protected location. The course area is buoyed off as a closed course during this time. During the radar run activity, this location is also equipped with a full race control staff including on-site Safety Divers, EMTs, wake and spectator fleet monitoring patrol boats, and on-site ambulance support.

SAFETY INSPECTIONS: All participants will be required to have the following mandatory features: kill switch tethers, hydraulic steering systems, VHF radios, helmets, and approved life jackets. On-board navigators are recommended, but not mandatory. Capsule boats must have a signed off inspection prior to entering the water verifying that the safety dive rescue team has inspected and become familiar with any escape hatch mechanisms.

TIMING FORMAT: Radar gun tracking and verification of 40 MPH max entry speed and top speed after 1 MILE distance traveled. In addition, an event provided GPS to be carried on-board as a back-up speed logging device.

ELIGIBILITY: The National Shoot-out Championship field of entries is limited to 30 total boats. Pre-registration in required. A declaration of estimated top speed must be entered onto your registration request. Approval for your participation is based on your declared / predicted speed. This event is limited to the 30 fastest boats that pre-register in the respective Classes.

PRE-REGISTRATION: $100 Pre-registration deposit required to reserve your 1 of 30 limited entries. ($100 Refunded upon arrival.)

OUTLAW SHOOT-OUT CALCUTTA: The calcutta auction for the 30 selected Outlaw Shoot-out boats will be held on Thursday evening at 8PM, at Landry’s (Kemah Boardwalk) on the 3rd floor.

RUN ORDER: Pre-registered participants will be entered into a run order lottery at the mandatory Safety Meeting. Run order will be drawn randomly at that time. Entries limited to 30 participants. You must be staged at the entry to the course and be ready to run in your selected order. You will be notified of the running order progress via VHF radio and then given the green flag for your course entry by Race Control. Speed runs will progress with a pass approximately every 5 minutes. Each entry limited to a maximum 2 runs.

AWARDS: National Shoot-out Championship awards and prizes will be presented to the winners at the Outlaw Champions Champagne Brunch on Sunday at 10:AM located in the Marine Max Showroom.
