Team Dirty Money, with owner/throttleman Bill Pyburn and driver Brit Lilly, had a very impressive showing at this weekend's Super Cat race at the 40th Annual Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix by P1 Offshore, ending up atop the podium for their first undisputed win. The team pulled ahead of M-CON/Monster Energy and further widened that lead as the laps wore on, forcing M-CON/Monster Energy's Tyler Miller and Myrick Coil to settle for second place. Chris Grant and Billy Moore of Team Graydel came in third.

Dirty Money, which is co-owned by Beau and Tiffiney Renfroe, has faced a lot of unfortunate events all season long, starting with running out of fuel on the final lap of the race at the season opener in Marathon, FL. There was also the race when their bottom escape hatch came open during the closing minutes of the race in Ocean City, MD after leading for most of the race, and the duo had to slow down enough to get it re-secured. That was also just enough time to allow M-CON/Monster Energy to pass and take the win.

But the event that hasn't been easy to get past for Dirty Money was their disqualification at the Shootout Offshore event on June 1, 2024 in Lake of the Ozarks, MO. After seemingly winning the Super Cat competiton and handed the checkered flag to celebrate with, the team was penalized later for a “reckless driving” infraction for missing a dogleg turn buoy on the course. This awarded owner/driver Billy Mauff and throttleman Jay Muller of Team WHM Motorsports the first place win, with M-CON/Monster Energy in second and Team CR Racing with Casey Boaz and Rob Unnerstall to take third. Dirty Money fell to last place after the penalties were incurred.

The team immediately filed a protest against the decision to the American Power Boat Association, the governing body of offshore racing and who had issued the penalties: 2.3.1 Slots and 3.15.6 missing a turn.

This situation had been going on behind-the-scenes since the protest was filed in early June, but the conclusion came today, giving Team Dirty Money their second victory in two days and a much welcomed redemption.

In a formal letter from the Office of the APBA National Commissioner, Mark Weber, it read, "The Committee understands, and agrees, that Dirty Money was in violation of at least two rule infractions, 2.3.1 Slots and 3.15.6 Missing a turn. This has been discussed and is admitted by the Dirty Money crew."

Weber continued, "Upon reviewing all documents provided to the Committee, after a question and answer email exchange, and after a Zoom meeting hearing on September 10, 2024, the Committee exchanged emails offering each members opinion as to the chain of events that led up to Dirty Money Racing Team filing an appeal with the APBA National Commissioner. After each member had a chance to offer their opinion, by a unanimous vote, the Committee upholds the appeal and finds in favor of Dirty Money Racing. The Committee further instructs the Offshore Racing Commission to correct the results of the Lakes of the Ozarks (LOTO) race that was held on June 1, 2024 to reflect the results of this ruling."

The excitement and happiness of the recent events has the entire team ecstatic and relieved but still keeping their laser focus.

"We are very happy with the outcome of (APBA National Commissioner) Mark Weber’s committees' ruling," Pyburn told Speedboat. "APBA has a great system in place that provides for checks and balances in these type of situations."

This recent reversal of rulings changes the chase for the coveted Super Cat National Championship US-1 title––one that has been held by M-CON/Monster Energy for the last three seasons. While the points are still being sorted out, Dirty Money is now within striking distance of M-CON/Monster Energy, making what's left of the offshore racing season very exciting.

The next event is Race World Offshore's Clearwater Offshore Nationals scheduled for September 27-29, 2024 in Clearwater, FL, followed by P1 Offshore in St. Petersburg October 17-20. The Key West Offshore World Championships are November 3-10.
