The final day of OPA’s World Finals event in Englewood, FL, kicked off with Class 7 boats competing for double points in the first of six races. Yesterday, The Punisher finished first, followed by Hangin N Bangin and Team Progression.

In today’s nine-lap bout, which limits Class 7 to 60 mph, Jackhammer grabbed the early lead, chased by Goofin’ Around, Hangin N Bangin and Team Progression, all ahead of yesterday’s victor, The Punisher (a 22’ Velocity was driven by Derek Dawson of Camdenton, MO, and throttled by Beau Purtle). That’s how the lineup stayed for the entire race, with Jackhammer—yesterday’s ninth-place finisher, with Julian Maldonado and Brian Guy—taking the checkered flag. At the time of this writing, inspectors still needed to examine the GPS units in each of the boats to make sure no competitors “broke out” of their 60-mph bracket before a World Champion could be officially announced. Hangin N Bangin, with John Hughes and Justin Rose, finished second on both days, which could give the team an edge when it comes to the awarding of points.

Next up, it was Class 3 (with five competitors) and Class 6 (down to seven competitors, as Deception did not start). Saturday’s Class 3 race had seen Team Woody finishing first in front of Elite Home Game Rooms and Typhoon. In today’s competition, Reindl Powerboats—with Chris Reindl and Marcus Stackpoole—unofficially finished first, followed by Team Woody and Typhoon. (Reindl had finished fourth on Saturday.) As with all of these races, the World Champion would be announced later in the day.

In Class 6, Rum Runners (with driver Michael McColgan and throttleman Fran Vellutato) repeated its Saturday first-place finish, grabbing the checkered flag and all but ensuring them a World Championship. (Money Monster had led for much of the race, but it suffered a mechanical failure and dropped out of the race.) CRC/Smith Brothers finished second, as it did yesterday, followed by Southern Arbor Sales.

Four additional races are scheduled for this afternoon.
