The OPA World Championship races continued its first day of racing in Englewood Beach Saturday afternoon, with bracket classes 4 and 5 running together as rain started to move into the area; that bout was followed by 10 Stock Vee competitors running by themselves.
Saris Racing, with Johnny and Jason Saris, dominated in Class 4, as five other competitors jockeyed for a podium finish. In the end, Control Freak and Old School unofficially finished second and third, pending GPS inspection.
Class 5 saw three boats battling for first place. Sabrina Phantom (formerly Bronx Phantom), with Vinnie and Rob Winoski, led the race early on, followed by Shoreline Plumbing and Team Woody. As the race continued, though, the Phantom fell back first to the second and finally the third position. Brent Appiarius and Eddie Simmons in Shoreline Plumbing took the unofficial win, followed by Team Woody and Sabrina Phantom.
In Stock Vee racing, #66 LSB Hurricane of Awesomeness/Rev-X Oil—which had won a World Championship in Key West last weekend—took an early lead and dominated the entire race, as driver Brit Lilly seemed poised to take yet another championship. (Jay Muller replaced regular throttleman Kevin Smith, who was unable to make it to Englewood.) #33 North Myrtle Beach RV had spent about three-quarters of the race in second place, but dropped out with an apparent engine problem. That left #26 You Gun Learn to nab the second-place spot, while V1 The Relentless Woody (formerly Done Deal) finished third.
