In the final Saturday race in OPA’s World Finals in Englewood, FL, five different classes ran together: Unlimited, Factory Stock, Vee Extreme, Class 1 and Class 2 as thunderstorms rolled in, soaking spectators and making the race increasingly difficult to view.
Four Unlimited Class competitors faced off: #11 The Preserver, #16 JBS, #21 DF Young and #43 Sweet Beans. DF Young, with driver Marc Granet and throttleman Rich Wyatt, led for most of the race and finished in first place, although their closest competitor, The Preserve, fought valiantly close behind and finished second, followed by JBS and Sweet Beans.
Class 1 competition saw the MTI Bat Boat (with driver Elliot Gray and throttleman Terry Forsythe) leading against Cigarette Justice League, which finished second in the two-boat field.
Billy Shipley and Chad Woody—who earlier in the day raced and won in Class 3—repeated their victory in Class 2’s Team Woody, besting Louis Giancontieri and Johnny Stanch in Strictly Business.
Factory Stock’s #7 Marine Technology (with Taylor Scism and Johnny Tomlinson) and Vee Extreme’s #20 Knucklehead Racing (with Ed Smith and Anthony Smith) each ran unopposed.
